JAMES FOWLE BALDWIN MARSHALL – AN ADVENTUROUS LIFE

JAMES FOWLE BALDWIN MARSHALL (August 8, 1818 – May 8, 1891)

JAMES FOWLE BALDWIN MARSHALL (August 8, 1818 – May 8, 1891) is a secondary character in KAMALEHUA: THE SHELTERING TREE, a new Opera composed by HERB MAHELONA with libretto by playwright VICTORIA Nฤ€LANI KNEUBUHL and commissioned by HAWAII OPERA THEATRE in Honolulu, Hawaii.

I have the great honor of creating the role of JFB MARSHALL in that premiere and in my preparations I learned so much about this man and his fascinating life. His account of the 1843 occupation by British Royal Navy Captain Paulet is one of the primary sources of the story of the main character of the opera TIMOTEO HA’ALILIO’S work as ambassador for KAMEHAMEHA III and his efforts in Washington D.C., London, and Paris.

Below is an audio reading of his account for the September 1883 edition of Harper’s Weekly that I made.

Below is the written account as it appeared in the September 1883 edition of Harper’s Weekly.
